Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rhulani Mokwena has, for the first time, confirmed that Pitso Mosimane indeed wanted him at Al Ahly.

Mosimane was given the chance to bring with him an assistant of his choice by Al Ahly, and he earmarked Mokwena for the role.

However, the young mentor turned him down, pledging his loyalty to Sundowns and club president Patrice Motsepe without really confirming the reported interest from Mosimane and Al Ahly.

Mosimane then roped in Cavin Johnson as his assistant and together, the pair delivered the CAF Champions League trophy at Al Ahly.

But Mokwena has now revealed the news of him possibly leaving Sundowns along with Mosimane at the time were true but admits he couldn’t betray Motsepe after he welcomed him back to the club.

The said interest came soon after Mokwena’s return to Chloorkop following three years at both Orlando Pirates and Chippa United.

“It’s the first time I say it, coach Pitso did want me to go with him to Al Ahly but I had to show respect and loyalty to the President [Motsepe] for opening the doors for me and welcoming me back with open arms,” Mokwena said in an interview with SA FM.

Mokwena said he didn’t just reject Mosimane’s request but it’s a decision he took with a sober mind.

“It’s a decision I took very sober because the task at Sundowns is also motivational,” added Mokwena.

Speaking about his respect for Mosimane, Rhulani said the Kagiso-born mentor deserves everything that he has achieved in his coaching career, and he knows there’s still more his former colleague is going to achieve.

Mokwena added that he uses Mosimane as a reference and inspiration.

“I have such mutual respect for coach Pitso and he deserves everything that comes his way and he’s still going to achieve more.

“I use him as a reference and inspiration. We look up to him and it’s important that I say it,” added Mokwena.
