Rescuers recovered two bodies after wall collapsed in Durban


Rescuers recovered two bodies from under collapsed wall in KwaMashu, Durban on Thursday, 25 February 2021. A third body was still trapped underneath the concrete and mud. 

The wall collapsed on Wednesday evening after heavy rains. Arrive Alive confirmed the “fatalities are both men, aged 24 and 28”.

According to Durban Metro Police, search and rescue teams were unable to ascertain how many others are trapped in the rubble. The search continues.

Spokesperson Parboo Sewpersad says medics and police were kept busy overnight. Officials responded to “more than 50 callouts last night for accidents, flooding and various issues affecting motorists”.

Sewpersad added:

“They also attended to some freak accidents on the roadway. Don’t drive in the rain of you feel unsafe to do so wait for the rain to stop until it gets lighter or eased off.” 

Furthermore, Police spokesperson Col Thembeka Mbele identified the victims as Simo Mkhize and Nathi Mbatha, explaining that they were “covered under debris”.

“Two men died at about 2:00 AM on Thursday morning at house A942 Siyanda when their neighbour’s wall structure collapsed over their shack while they were asleep.”
