North West: Hawks arrest security guard for cash-in-transit robbery

Two suspects, including a security guard, are expected to appear before the Zeerust Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 21 October 2021. This is in connection with a cash-in-transit robbery that took place on Monday.

More arrests expected in cash-in-transit robbery

According to the Directorare for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), also known as the Hawks, security guards were collecting money from a retailer in Zeerust when they were confronted by five armed men.

“It is reported that about 8.40am, security guards from ART were collecting money from Three Star Cash and Carry in Zeerust when they were accosted by about five armed suspects, who got away with an undisclosed amount of money,” said Hawks spokesperson Capt Lloyd Ramovha.

“The suspects drove a white BMW with no registration plates. Follow-up investigations led to the arrest of one guard after questioning by the Hawks’ serious organised crime investigators. The second suspect was arrested this morning in Zeerust. The team managed to recover the getaway BMW, cash canisters and coins from the suspect’s house.”

Ramovha says they expect to make more arrests in the case and the investigation is still underway.

Earlier this week, several security guards appeared in court for staging a cash-in transit robbery in Witbank.

When one of them spoke to police, he said they were collecting cash from a business in the (CBD) Central Business District when he was robbed of the two bags filled with money on October 9. However, the man had a tough time sticking to his story, which made police very suspiscious.

“When the policeman interviewed the victim, he kept on changing his story. It was decided that he would be detained for questioning. The suspects ended up telling the policeman that the robbery was planned together with his former colleagues,” a spokesperson is quoted as having told Witbank News.
