A police reservist and a man believed to be her boyfriend were driving along a street in Diepkloof, Soweto, at approximately 17:00 when they were attacked by an individual believed to be the reservist’s ex-boyfriend, according to News24 and IOL.

The assailant fired several shots at the couple in the street – 15 spent cartridges were found at the scene – before fleeing the scene, according to the police.

The vehicle’s occupants were declared dead at the scene while the gunman allegedly killed himself at his Orlando East home. Visuals of the crime scene that showed the Yellow Ford Mustang the alleged couple was travelling in quickly found their way to social media.

Police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe confirmed the shooting and said the deceased reservist, Thembani Mbali Jele, was attached to the Diepkloof Visible Policing Unit. The police, however, would not comment on the relationship between the deceased as that formed part of their investigation.

“Gauteng police are investigating two cases of murder and an inquest after a female reservist constable attached to the Diepkloof Visible Policing Unit and a male person she was driving with were killed in a hail of bullets on Baragwanath road,” said Mathe to IOL.

“The person who is believed to be a suspect in this case allegedly committed suicide, he was found to have shot himself at his place of residence in Orlando East.”

The South African sent queries to the police; their comment was not received by the time of publication.
