COVID-19 update: Cases in SA rise by 1 676, death toll now 49 667

The latest COVID-19 figures have been released. According to the Health Ministry, 1 862 new cases were identified in South Africa. As of today, the death toll stands at 49 667 with recoveries at 1 424 401.

The total number of vaccines administered is 52 647.

COVID-19 update: 25 February 2021

Breakdown of new confirmed COVID-19 cases

As per Health Minister Zweli Mkhize’s report, 1 676 confirmed cases were identified during the past 24 hours (1 862 on 24 February 2020). Unfortunately, we also lost 144 patients to COVID-19-related illnesses.

As per the report: 7 patients from the Eastern Cape passed away, 25 from the Free State, 14 from Gauteng, 10 from KwaZulu-Natal, 22 from Mpumalanga, 31 from North West, 2 from Northern Cape, and 13 from Western Cape.

At the time of publishing, the Health Ministry recorded 8 999 322 cumulative COVID-19 tests, of which 31 862 were done during the past 24 hours: 14 424 at public facilities and 17 438 at private facilities.

Global statistics

At the time of publishing, COVID-19 is affecting 219 countries and territories. The global caseload stands at 112,945,635, with the death toll at 2,503,415 and recoveries at 88,539,425.

The US is the worst-affected with 516,403 deaths from 28,940,131 cases. After the US, the hardest-hit countries are India with 156,742 deaths from 11,046,432 cases, and Brazil with 248,646 deaths from 10,260,621.

Russia has 84,430 deaths from 4,200,902 cases while the UK recorded 121,747 deaths from 4,144,577 cases. South Africa is currently 16th on the list, preceded by Iran, Poland, Mexico, Argentina, Columbia, Germany, Turkey, Italy, Spain, and France.
